The lighthouse museum and the “People of the Coast” show trail

The museum is located in the heart of the lighthouse rotunda. You can follow a fascinating show trail, guided by the story of a young castaway stranded on the Pointe de Chassiron. In each of the 6 rooms, you will discover many period objects, testimonies, models and film screenings that immerse the visitor in the daily life of Oléron sailors and farmers. If you have time, take a little detour to the "maison de la pointe" - the former house of the lighthouse keepers - which houses temporary exhibitions and offers educational workshops dedicated to understanding the marine environment.

The lighthouse garden “the landscaped wind rose”

Don't leave Chassiron before discovering the garden designed in the shape of a compass rose. Located at the foot of the lighthouse, the garden is labeled "remarkable garden". It is populated with many species of grasses, ornamental plants, roses (21 varieties), but also a vegetable garden and vines. We have fun solving the puzzles to discover the history of the lighthouse, the diversity of marine species and the specificities of the foreshore. We learn little anecdotes with the help of information terminals, maps, turntables, sighting glasses, audio terminal...

The little story of the lighthouse…

To reduce the risk of shipwrecks on the north coast of the island, Colbert had a first fire tower built in 1685 to mark the entrance to the straits. In 1836, the building was replaced by a more modern and more effective lighthouse to guide sailors, the Chassiron lighthouse! At the time, it was all white and it was only in 1926 that it was decided to paint 3 black stripes to differentiate it from its neighbor, the Baleines lighthouse, on the island of Ré.
